Flume on returning back to his homeland after Los Angeles left him feeling uninspired: “I put pressure on myself. And being a solo producer, it’s always a mental battle”

Australian producer Flume has recently spoken out about his struggle to create music in the LA setting, stating that returning to the laid-back lifestyle of Australia, his homeland, allows him to push his sound further than ever before.

Speaking with MusicTech as part of our June digital cover, Harley Streten – AKA Flume – discussed his latest album Palaces and explained how he struggled to adjust to fully express himself when creating music in Los Angeles.

“I wasn’t feeling particularly creative [and] I’m quite a neurotic person; I put pressure on myself,” he tells us. “Being a solo producer, it’s always a mental battle. One day, you’re like, ‘I did this amazing song, this is gonna be great’. The next day, you’re like, ‘I fucking suck, I made that one good thing, it’ll never happen again’”.

Describing the differences between a remote and in-studio setting, Flume admitted that when not in his own surroundings, the pressure of deadlines often hinders him from reaching his full potential. He states, “in a studio session, there’s pressure to keep things moving. So I end up doing safer things that I know will work. When it’s remote, I can do things that I don’t know if we’re going to work and take my time.”

This is a practice that the producer seems to have put into effect within his latest release – returning to Australia’s Byron Bay as a way to experience the “simple, wholesome existence” he often craves.

As for the impact of this lifestyle on his sound, Flume seems eager to showcase his new surroundings in Palaces, even going as far as embedding the subtle singing of birds into the introduction of the title track.

“I put all the pieces of the puzzle together and was able to dig into some sketches and complete them,” he states. “The album came together in Australia and I wanted to incorporate my environment into the music because it was such a scatter of [material] from different years and different times.”

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a daily word game that you can find online here. It’s fun, simple, and like a crossword, you can only play it once a day. Every 24 hours there is a new word of the day, and it’s up to you to find out what it is.

How to play Wordle?

Wordle gives players six chances to guess a randomly selected five-letter word. If you have the correct letter in the correct place, it is displayed in green. A correct letter in the wrong place appears in yellow. A letter that is not in the word anywhere appears gray.

You can enter a total of six words, which means you can enter five keywords from which you can learn hints about the letters and their locations. Then you have a chance to put those tips into practice. Or you can test the performance and guess the word of the day in three, two, or even once.

Krewella on their $10,000 mic: “It was a tall order to think that we were worthy of it”

Source: https://musictech.com/news/krewella-on-their-10000-mic-it-was-a-tall-order-to-think-that-we-were-worthy-of-it/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=krewella-on-their-10000-mic-it-was-a-tall-order-to-think-that-we-were-worthy-of-it

EDM sisters Yasmine and Jahan Yousaf, better known as Krewella, have said that the Sony C800G mic – favoured by Dr Dre, Eminem, Luther Vandross and more – was a “tall order” for the chart-topping duo.

READ MORE: Tourist says new album was made with just “a laptop, a phone, an OP-1 and a UA Apollo Twin”

Speaking on the MusicTech My Forever Studio podcast, Yasmine revealed the backstory behind the mic. She said that the Sony C800G was their first-ever microphone purchase, taking out a loan from their parents to pay for it. Currently, the street price of the mic, originally released in 1992, sits at around $10,000.

In the early stages of their career, Krewella had a third member, Chris Trindl, who was working closely with engineer Ken Lewis. Yasmine explained how Lewis’ recommendation was part of the reason for the extravagant purchase.

“We were all obsessed with the pop music of the time, which was – I mean, I know it’s probably a dark thing to talk about right now – but Dr Luke was like, the head of what was happening,” Yasmine says.

“And that was like 2010, he was the king of pop music… that was the mic that they used all the time in his studios. And we were obsessed with that era of music. And yeah, it kind of stemmed from that. It was a tall order to think that we were worthy of that mic, but I think we’ve grown into it nicely.”

When asked how the microphone stacks up against prestigious competitors such as the Neumann U 67, Yasmine said: “I love Neumann mics, don’t get me wrong… But the Sony C800, since it is more of a bright and shiny mic, sounds amazing on Jahan’s voice and I feel like I have to process my vocals slightly differently and EQ my vocals a lot differently on the Sony C800. But it doesn’t change the fact that the sheen on it for the kind of music we make again, it’s like more pop-leaning, dark-pop leaning dance music. It has just been the thing that has lasted and withstood time for us.”

The Sony C800G is a dual large-diaphragm microphone that sports a distinct design – on the rear of the casing is a heat sink that optimises the overall temperature of the unit. The ultra-low-noise mic is renowned for its pristine clarity, extreme versatility and its natural boost between 8-14kHz, all assisting in a pro-grade recording right off the bat.

Audio-Technica’s new ATH-M20xBT wireless headphones boast studio-quality audio paired with effortless wireless convenience

Japan-based tech company Audio-Technica has recently unveiled the latest edition to its expansive range of headphones: the over-ear wireless M20xBT edition. Inspired by the brand’s previous M Series headphones, the new model boasts top-grade sound on the go.

Available now, the company states that, with its newest addition to its range of headphones, it aims to deliver a precise, natural sound that combines studio-quality audio with the ease and comfort of a wireless design.

The latest design and sound quality are based on the M20x studio headphones, according to Audio-Technica, making both models the more affordable counterpart to the highly-acclaimed M50x model.

Featuring 40mm drivers with copper-clad aluminium wire voice coils, the headphones come tuned for low-frequency performance delivered to a high standard. In addition, the M20xBT come with a low-latency mode, ideal for users interested in live-streaming and gaming and with multipoint pairing, allowing for connection to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

With up to 60 hours of playback on a full charge, the company seem to have prioritised convenience when designing this latest model. For instance, the M20xBT come bearing a USB-C charging connection which supports a 10-minute fast charging mode and physical buttons embedded on the left ear cup to make it easy for users to control calls and music playback when using the headphones.

While active noise cancellation is not overtly included on the spec sheet, Audio-Technica assures users that their over-ear design still prioritises the isolation of external noise, saying that the mere design prevents external noise from interrupting the listening experience.

For those who would rather not use Bluetooth exclusively, the M20xBT also ships with a 1.2m audio cable, giving users the option to listen to music both wirelessly or directly connected to their preferred device.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M20xBT are available now for £80.

Further information on the headphones can be found at audio-technica.com.

The Big Review: Even at lower specs, Apple’s Mac Studio is an immense machine for creative pros

Source: https://musictech.com/reviews/consumer/the-big-review-apple-mac-studio/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-big-review-apple-mac-studio

In the run-up to its launch, Apple kept the Mac Studio under wraps in a way that’s almost impossible with its iPhones, subject as they are to frenzied speculation across the consumer tech press. The Mac Studio, however, is a more creator-focused machine and is therefore relatively niche, even within the Mac lineup.

READ MORE: Bose Soundlink Flex review: Versatile Bluetooth travel speaker packs a punch but works best at home

Mac represents a much smaller slice of Apple’s gargantuan profits than the iPhone and the company’s services arm. Pro-grade Macs have long been the choice of many creative professionals, and that’s something the company is willing to devote considerable resources to maintaining.

Apple Mac StudioImage: Simon Vinall for MusicTech

The Mac Studio name has arrived with intent. It is the Mac for creatives – musicians, photographers, filmmakers, designers and even coders that want the desktop experience, more ports, and need to go beyond what the current iMac can do. The iMac is a beautiful machine for less demanding users but tops out at an eight-core standard M1 and 16GB of RAM. The Mac Mini too is fine for everyday users, but lacks the grunt the Studio offers.

Apple Mac StudioImage: Simon Vinall for MusicTech

The Mac Studio starts at £1,999 and boasts promising specs. You get the Mac and a power lead but have to add your own keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and screen(s).
The base model Mac Studio is an excellent solution for creators, with an M1 Max chip packing 10 cores, a 24-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine and 32GB of RAM. Upping the RAM to 64GB will cost £400, which is worthwhile if you can stretch to it given that it’s not user-upgradeable. The standard 512GB storage seems stingy and, while this can be upped to 1TB for £200, 2TB will cost £600 and the full 8TB is a staggering £2,400.

Considering the fast Thunderbolt I/O on offer, you might consider going with less internal storage and adding a large, fast external SSD for data for less money.
Then there’s the processors. A s… Read More
